Les recensements de la population1, ou dénombrements de la population1 ont pour but de recueillir des renseignements sur l’état de la population (201-8) à un moment donné. Le plus souvent, on recense simultanément l’ensemble des habitants d’un pays : on dit alors qu’on procède à un recensement général2. Mais il arrive que les opérations de recensement soient limitées à une catégorie d’habitants ou à une fraction du territoire; on dit alors qu’il s’agit d’un recensement partiel3. Dans les deux cas, il s’agit d’opérations exhaustives4, c’est-à-dire où l’on recueille des renseignements sur chacun des individus constituant la population ou la catégorie étudiées. Les micro-recensements5 sont, au contraire, limités à un échantillon (160-2), généralement grand, de la population; ils appartiennent donc à la catégorie des enquêtes par sondage6, ou enquêtes sur échantillon6 (cf. § 160). Pour mettre au point une méthode de recensement ou d’enquête (203-4), on procède parfois à des recensements d’essai7, ou recensements préliminaires7, ou à des enquêtes pilotes7. Pour vérifier la complétude (230-2) et l’exactitude des données collectées par un recensement, on procède de plus à une vérification post-censitaire8 par enquête de vérification du recensement9.

Période intercensitaire : période comprise entre deux recensements. Les dénombrements modernes correspondent à ce qu’on appelait autrefois des dénombrements par tête, (cf. 110-2). On entendait alors en effet par dénombrement toute évaluation — même très imprécise — fondée plus ou moins directement sur quelque comptage (203-2) ou énumération (203-1). Un dénombrement de la population pouvait reposer, par ex., sur le comptage des baptêmes (214-2) enregistrés pendant un certain nombre d’années, ou sur une énumération de feux (110-3), voire de paroisses (214-1*).
